Title Artistic Research and the Lingering Gaze of Thought

Abstract I will start with addressing so-called ’non-traditional research outputs’. That will be an entry to say something more in general about the place of artistic research in academia and its possible alignments with other research fields. I then want to highlight four aspects of artistic research: the agency of practices and things; the importance of practice-based methods; the condition of knowledge, specifically 4E-cognition; and the articulation and publication of artistic research. I need those aspects in order to say something about discursivity and the role of language.

  • Henk Borgdorff is emeritus professor of Research in the Arts at the Academy of Creative and Performing Arts (ACPA), Leiden University and the Royal Conservatoire, University of the Arts, The Hague. He was editor of the Journal for Artistic Research (until 2015), co-founder of the Research Catalogue, and president of the Society for Artistic Research (2015-2019). Endangered Conceptual Worlds

The 2026 International Forum on Artistic Research takes place from 23 to 26 June 2026. Hosted by the University of Galway on the Atlantic coast of Ireland, the Forum addresses the challenges of Endangered Conceptual Worlds. As the 17th annual conference of the Society for Artistic Research it is the largest conference on practice-based research within and through the arts, bringing together more than 300 international participants: leading practitioners, scholars and policymakers from the entire range of arts-based disciplines.

The 2026 Forum on Artistic Research website has been inaccessible for several hours on Friday night and Saturday morning. Unfortunately, an update to the web server was scheduled to take place, which automatically activated maintenance mode and prevented any work on the submissions during the night and the next morning.
