Amongst 
Objects

Jussi Parikka describes the contemporary condition as an expanding ‘multitude of times that overlap and cannot be resolved into one multitemporal reality’ . In this epoch of crisis, the relevance of visual art practice- it’s role in communicating complex and multifaceted ideas is now more pertinent than ever. Exhibitions are increasingly understood as sites for knowledge production, and as having a material language. Activated by material agency, embodied installations of objects, matter, material, sound, form and light can speak when we fail to find words with the correct timbre, or connotation. These physical alterations material entanglements can speak more accurately, or with more familiarity to the space and place we occupy. An exhibition is a space where time passes strangely, where multiple histories collide, objects or images can act as displaced series of material questioning, a multisensory shape shifting space which can be read from multiple directions.

In this presentation I will speak to the importance of the exhibition as a form of complex, material communication for scholarly discourse, a space of grounded knowledge that should be considered as academic publishing- a public siting of a collision of material research, testing, conversations, place-making and materially grounded dialogue.

Short biographies of the presenter(s):
- Fiona Kelly is a visual artist, an assistant lecturer in Fine Art Studio at MTU, Crawford College of Art & Design, and a PhD candidate in NCAD, Dublin (2021-2027).
  
  Fiona makes sculptural objects and printed matter with the aid of her foraged, ever-expanding archive of waste. 
  Her work is housed in the public collections of the National Gallery of Ireland, the Crawford Art Gallery, UCC, the OPW and the Jyväskylä Art Museum, Finland. Her current research into fallowness and the creative potential which comes with actioning strategic dormancy, is supported by the the Arts Council of Ireland (2025).

Fiona has delivered numerous public lectures alongside her teaching and visual art practice which include; Radical Humanities Conference, University College Cork; Radical Entanglement & Environmental Residues in Visual Art Practice. NCAD, Dublin; a field of multiple destructions, Artist Lecture Series, National Sculpture Factory, Ireland; Peatlands in the Imagination; A Revolution in How We Live, University College Cork.

My proposal is for an academic paper which I would like to present as a lecture but with the capacity to show moving imagery and ambient soundscapes alongside, an experiment in distracted listening.










Spatial and technical requirements :
I would like access to a high res projector and sound system to play video and ambient soundscapes in tandem with my paper.
