| Abstract | My exploration of utopian ideals and speculative futures, in my work ‘Study in Grey’ examines the intersections of language, landscape, and environmental decline. Created during a residency at the Caribbean Marine Biological Institute (Carmabi) in Curaçao, funded by the Arts Council of Ireland. ‘Study in Grey’ is a film-poem that explores the duality and multiplicity of language in relation to place, and how these elements shape our understanding of the natural world. The incorporated images were shot at sites of preservation and conservation on a customised full spectrum camera that had been modified for spectrographic work on corals. It is a juxtaposition of landscape and language, and seeks to explore constructs of strata and stratum. The audio narration recites the poem ‘Kuadro na Shinishi’ which translates in English to ‘Study in Grey’, originally written in Papiamento by Pierre A. Lauffer. The production of ‘Study in Grey’, involved the recording of multi-channel audio narration, and the integration of digital still imagery. I collaborated with students and academics from the University College Dublin community, to record audio narration in Dutch, English, Portuguese, Spanish and Papiamento. The narrative of the poem is a reflection on climate catastrophe. The work offers a speculative view of a future where the loss of language, culture, and environmental integrity are deeply intertwined. |

| Previous presentations or iterations of the research | ‘Study in Grey’, was exhibited at the Pumphouse, in Dublin Port, 2023, launched by a panel discussion with Marta Dijkhoff, linguist, educator and Bettina Migge, Full Professor of Linguistics at UCD. The film 'Study in Grey', was screened at IMMA Earth Rising, September, 2023. 'Study in Grey' presented at National College of Art and Design, Dublin Research Exhibition & Programme, 19 Mar - 17 Apr 2026. Research will be presented in solo show: ‘Study in Grey’, Súil Gallery, Ennis, 2027. |
| Additional information | Link to film on youtube: https://youtu.be/kdW9jCNCJrQ Study in Grey - 10:23 mins duration, played on a loop or with other films in a film program. The film will be projected onto a large format screen or suitable wall, with sound. A folded A3 riso-printed booklet accompanies the film, listing contributors and the poem text 'Study in Grey' in the five languages explored in the film, (number of copies to be determined). Alternatively or including the information from booklet in poster format, installed beside projection to contextualise the work. |
| Spatial and technical requirements | A darkened space is preferred to create in immersive experience. A high quality HD projector is required. Film displayed at Aspect ratio 16:9. Film can be projected onto a screen (freestanding or dropdown) or a suitable wall surface. Projection wall size or projection screen requested, minimum 330cm wide by 187cm high. Stereo sound system independent from projector, with two speakers and an amp. I will provide the digital file for the film on memory stick. |
