Abstract:
Sea Light Arc – Kythera is a long-term observational project that investigates the ephemeral interplay between sunlight, the sea surface, and time. Conducted on the island of Kythera, Greece, a liminal space at the intersection of multiple seas and meteorological systems, the project foregrounds the partiality and incompleteness of perception. Light is never singular or universal; it manifests asynchronously across the island’s coasts, producing reflections and arcs that cannot be witnessed simultaneously. By systematically recording these phenomena through field notes, diagrams, and restrained photographic traces, the work constructs an archive of fragmentary experiences rather than a definitive image.

This project engages with Kythera as an endangered conceptual world—a specific ecological, geographical, and temporal system that offers counter-models to homogenized perceptual and aesthetic standards. It emphasizes attentive observation, patience, and immersion as methods for understanding phenomena that resist instrumentalization or simplification. In doing so, it demonstrates the capacities of minoritised ways of knowing: knowledge that is slow, local, and contingent, emerging through careful attunement to environmental conditions.

By presenting light as evidence of temporal and spatial flux rather than spectacle, Sea Light Arc – Kythera positions artistic research as a strategy to document and honor ephemeral, non-dominant forms of knowledge. The project resonates with broader urgencies of epistemic sovereignty, highlighting how place-specific observation and experiential methodologies can provide critical insight into resilience, resistance, and alternative temporalities in both ecological and cultural contexts.

Short biographies of the presenter(s):
- Angela Fragkou is a new media artist, researcher, and bioscientist based in Greece. Her work explores the intersection of art, science, and technology, using biosciences and digital methodologies to examine perception, time, and environmental phenomena. Fragkou holds a PhD in New Media (Bio) Art from the Athens School of Fine Arts and has participated in international residencies, exhibitions, and interdisciplinary projects that connect scientific research with artistic practice. She develops site-specific, observational, and experimental projects that investigate hybrid models of knowledge, perception, and temporality.










Previous presentations or iterations of the research:
The project Sea Light Arc – Kythera is currently in development and has not been presented or exhibited previously. This submission represents the first formal presentation of the research.

Additional information:
The presentation will include a digital observation diary documenting Sea Light Arc – Kythera. The diary records not only what is visible at sunrise, but also what cannot be seen simultaneously from other locations on the island. It integrates structured field notes, light diagrams, photographs, and video sequences, maintained on an iPad for precise temporal tracking. Each entry follows a standardized format (date, location, orientation, environmental conditions, sea surface, sensory impressions, timeline of light arcs, and asynchronous reflections), emphasizing the partiality and fragmentation of perception as central to the research. This method allows the audience to experience the observational process, the gaps, and the temporal variability of light as an emergent, site-specific phenomenon.










Spatial and technical requirements :
The contribution will be presented as a poster. Requirements include: a vertical display space (approx. 90x120 cm), access to power for an iPad or tablet to show digital diagrams, photos, and short video loops. If feasible, the digital content can be projected via a projector. No additional lighting or specialized equipment is required.










Potential risks or ethical concerns:
The project involves site-specific observation of natural light and sea conditions, with no interaction with human subjects or sensitive environments. Minor risks include exposure to weather, uneven terrain, or slippery surfaces during sunrise. Standard safety precautions for outdoor fieldwork will be followed. No ethical concerns are anticipated regarding data collection, as all materials document natural phenomena and not individuals.
